B Corp + Nike Birthday + Big Up Mediorite (B+A Bulletin #338)

It’s official, we’re a B Corp - a business committed to forging a better world, one of just 700 UK-based companies that meet B Corp's rigorous standards.

It’s a big moment: it’s recognition of our impact, it’s a commitment to keep progressing and it’s the next step on our mission to connect, educate + embolden the problem solvers the world needs now.

More on our score, and reflections from our Co-Founder Ben, here.

B+A Babble

Being a B Corp is, and will always be, a team effort. So here’s what it means to all of us at B+A - filmed in our Snapshot style that many of you will be familiar with from our work together.

We asked the team what good business means to them, the impact that they think B+A has and why they're proud to work at a B Corp.

Watch on the B+A Vimeo channel here.

B+A Brilliance

Over to B+A Business Development Director Elliot for this section:

"It wouldn’t be right if we didn’t give our friends at Nike a big birthday shout-out on their 50th anniversary. We could go on forever about all of the defining moments in sport that the brand has been a part of - but they got there first. They called on Mars Blackman a.k.a Spike Lee to create an amazing short film called ‘Seen It All’, which celebrates the past + draws inspiration from it to look to the future."

Here's to the next 50! Spend the next 5 mins watching the film here.

B+A Books etc.

There are those moments of gold when you pop the radio on making breakfast and are rewarded with a programme to savour. That happened  for Giulia this week when she got to know engineer Chi Onwurah over an episode of The Life Scientific on BBC Radio 4.

One of the first black, working-class women engineers in the UK, Chi built the first mobile phone network in Nigeria, when the country was without a reliable electricity supply and paved the way for technological advancements that now populate and enable our everyday lives.

Today she is Shadow Minister for Science, Research and Innovation in the UK, and talks articulately about the need for regulation to support safe and empowering technology for the people. The best thing about the interview though? Her warm and generous laugh - isn’t the best when someone has a fab laugh?!

Tuck in and enjoy, here.

B+A Big up

This week is Mary’s turn to share her problem solver the world needs now. Over to Mary:

"Meet Lucy, Founder of Mediorite - an award-winning social enterprise with the mission to tackle youth unemployment and now a friend of B+A.

Lucy was introduced to us by our very own Problem Solver, Katy after having known each other since the early days of Art Against Knives. Whilst keeping diversity and inclusion at the heart of Mediorite’s values, Lucy has been fostering young talent and connecting them with real opportunities, training and meaningful employment for the past 13 years.

Mediorite are our latest B+A Exchange partner (n.b Echange is our pro bono consultancy offer to charities) and it has been a delight and inspiration to work with Lucy. I can’t wait to see what future collaborations could look like, watch this space."
